Council approves police command vehicle replacement and reappoints three officers

Councilors on Aug. 5 authorized two police actions: replacement of a command vehicle (Resolution 26‑54) and extending conditional offers to three officers (Resolution 26‑69).
Police leadership told council the command vehicle was totaled after being struck by a drunk driver earlier this year and that replacing it restores departmental capability; the chief said staffing shortages have delayed the immediate need but added that conditional offers and recent hiring activity make the vehicle necessary by year‑end. The chief estimated that, even with accelerated procurement, outfitting and delivery would likely push receipt to late fall or early winter.
Separately, the council approved extending conditional reappointment offers to three officers — Tyler Wagner, Don Thomas and Kane Barrett — who previously left the Norristown Police Department and have requested to return. The chief said the officers left in good standing, will complete full background checks if council approved the offers, and that rehiring represents a retention and staffing improvement for the department.
Both resolutions passed by roll call at the Aug. 5 meeting. Staff said the vehicle purchase and personnel onboarding will follow normal procurement and hiring steps and that specifics (delivery timeline, outfitting breakdown and background‑check completion) will be handled by police staff and reported back to council as items progress.
