Wide field of library-trustee applicants highlight programming, fundraising and early-literacy needs

Several candidates seeking library trustee positions told the council they view the South Burlington Library as a vital community hub and want to support programming, early literacy and fundraising.

Christie Liddy Repstead described more than a decade of library work and a master’s degree in library and information science, and said she wanted to support and sustain the library’s programs. Rebecca, a new mom and attorney who works with the Northern Border Regional Commission, said toddler-time programs and language classes helped her build community and encouraged the trustees to keep expanding early-reading and language programming. Monica Taylor emphasized fundraising and donor relations, citing prior work as development director at Hunger Free Vermont and suggesting a role with the library foundation.

Council staff explained to applicants that the library trustees are a statutory committee with independent authority over library policy while the council provides oversight on work plans and capital requests; most library funding comes from the general fund/property taxes, supplemented by friends-and-foundation fundraising.

Applicants raised outreach ideas — including programming for older adults with different schedules, partnerships with other library systems, and promotional or editorial support — and confirmed they can meet monthly meeting commitments or participate remotely. Council members thanked applicants and said the council expects to act on appointments at the June 16 meeting.
