Assumption Church seeks street closure for Aug festival; council to consider resolution

Representatives from Assumption Church, including Father Esteban, asked the council to authorize a temporary closure of 1st Street from Union through the eastern property line for a multi-day festival Aug. 13–17 between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. each night. The church confirmed insurance coverage, said they would operate a shuttle (supplementing the downtown shuttle) and said concession stands and food vendors would be placed along the closed street and sidewalks.
Father Esteban described the event as a family festival and noted prior editions ran without incident; council members asked about ride placement and parking, and the church said rides would be confined to the parking lot and concession stands would be placed on sidewalks. Staff recommended passage of a resolution to allow the closure and confirmed the city would issue a special-event permit and require insurance.
