The Coconino County Accommodation School District Governing Board on Oct. 9 approved an AI Guidance Document for staff, students and families aimed at offering broad, updateable direction on classroom and staff uses of artificial intelligence. President and Superintendent Cheryl Mango-Paget approved the document during the meeting.
Chief Education Officer Dave Dirksen described the draft as a "broad document that allowed guidance" and said the district anticipates future updates. "AI is a tool like any other educational tool," Mango-Paget said, a phrase she used to underline the board’s approach to integrating the guidance into instruction and policy. If approved, John Phelps was identified to post the guidelines to the district website for public access.
Board members framed the guidance as a living document that will be revisited as classroom uses, vendor tools and regulatory context evolve. The approval was recorded as an action item during the meeting; no vote tally beyond the president’s approval was recorded in the minutes.
