School division asks county for $37,500 local match to accept full $250,000 security grant; supervisors agree to hold request

Amelia County Public Schools asked the Board of Supervisors on Dec. 18 for a supplemental local appropriation to accept the full $250,000 state school security equipment grant.
“For your approval this evening, is an appropriation request totaling $212,500, 175,000 of which is new state funds awarded, and 37,500 of which is a is requested additional funding from the county to support the local match for the full state funds,” Mr. Trump said, presenting the finance report and appropriation request.
The requested local amount would close the gap between the division’s existing budgeted local match and the full state award. Division officials said the funds would be used only for approved security enhancements—entryway hardware, surveillance communication upgrades and classroom door hardware—and that projects must be completed by June 30.
Several supervisors questioned the timing. One board member noted the county has approved multiple midyear appropriations and warned about cumulative fiscal pressure: “See, my problem is we've spent a little over 750,000 in appropriations this year, and we just cannot continue this,” a supervisor said, urging caution.
Board members discussed options including funding only the projects already covered by the $25,000 local match in the budget, or authorizing a partial scope if the county does not provide the additional match. After discussion the board agreed not to take a motion that evening and asked staff and the school division to return with additional financial detail and a plan for reconsideration at a later meeting.
The school superintendent and finance staff said they would keep the board informed and re-present the request when the board has clearer revenue projections.
What’s next: The school division will keep the appropriation request on file for future consideration and supply any requested financial detail; the board did not vote to appropriate funds at the Dec. 18 meeting.
