Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council that he has tried to contact a new hire approved at the prior meeting but has received no response and "is assuming he is no longer interested." Pernice said he will reach out to the regional consortium of applicants (32 candidates on the list) and will check with the Civil Service Commission to schedule oral exams and send letters to prospects.
Chief Pernice said his long-term preference remains hiring two part-time officers but acknowledged only one position had been approved by the council. After the update the council agreed to continue searching to fill a single part-time officer opening. The update was provided during the police-chief report portion of the Aug. 27 meeting.
