Piedmont proclaims Hispanic Heritage Month; students and mentors accept proclamation

Mayor Betsy Smigel Anderson read a city proclamation recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month and invited members of Grupo Latino de Piedmont and affinity mentors to receive it. The proclamation traces the observance's federal origins and calls on residents to celebrate contributions from Hispanic and Latino communities.
Student speakers and affinity mentors said the recognition helps students and families feel seen and included. "I identify as Mexican American... I feel very honored and very blessed to now see that the town that I've been growing up in my whole life is really embracing the culture," said Joaquin Fierro, a Piedmont High sophomore. Affinity mentor Carmen Botero said the acknowledgment would help "everybody come together."
Staff and council members joined students for a photo after the proclamation. The council praised the turnout and thanked school staff and affinity mentors for their work with students.
