Newport wins MRPA Award for pedestrian and trail network planning

JJ Williams of the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association presented Newport with an Award of Excellence for the city's pedestrian and trail network planning.
"On behalf of the MRP awards committee, it is my pleasure to present an award of excellence to the city of Newport for its winning project of pedestrian and trail network planning," JJ Williams said. Mayor Elliott said the plan "calls for a doubling of almost the number of miles we currently have of trails in the city," noting trail expansion was a top priority identified in the city's recent parks survey.
The MRPA awards committee praised the project's planning, investment and expected long-term benefits to the public. Council members and staff framed the award as recognition of ongoing park-system work: last year the system earned its first award, and staff said the new plan will guide incremental implementation over several years. The council offered public thanks to staff and to Derek Morrison for nominating the project.
The presentation came at the start of the council meeting; no formal action was required to accept the award.
