Residents say daycare drop‑offs at Lexington intersection are creating daily hazards

Several neighborhood residents told the Astoria Traffic Safety Advisory Committee that a home childcare operating off Lexington is producing frequent safety hazards during drop-off and pick-up.
"I have untold number of videos of children running into the street," said Jerry Buford, 396 West Lexington, who said the problem has persisted since August and that attempts at informal agreements with the provider had failed. Buford told the committee he has seen parents park in front of driveways and that loud confrontations have occurred in the right-of-way.
Paul Steinman, 393 West Leuchtton Avenue, said he has photos showing repeated instances of children in the street and property damage he links to the increased parking and maneuvering. "Every day, there’s children in the street," Steinman said, adding that lack of a sidewalk and limited pull‑over space make the site particularly hazardous where Lexington, Irvington and Grand Avenue meet.
Residents said they would provide photographs and video to staff. Staff and commissioners encouraged collecting objective measurements and said staff would prepare a report for the committee’s July meeting to document traffic patterns and help determine whether engineering, education or enforcement measures should be recommended.
