Mendocino CSD schedules plant dewatering and grit removal starting July 13; warns residents of possible odors

Ryan said dewatering is scheduled to begin the week of July 13 and that crews will place frac tanks to store pumped wastewater while staff clean and inspect the aeration basin and install a new baffle. He described steps for grit removal and temporary dewatering of material into drying beds prior to off-site disposal; staff said the dried material is likely to be hauled to Redwood Landfill and that contractors will use equipment to speed drying while acknowledging that moving material can sometimes increase odor risk.
Ryan said the district is drafting and sending a letter to community members, has notified the state regulator, and will provide a complaint form and a link to the California EPA complaint portal for residents who observe problems. He asked the public to report concerns and said staff will try to minimize disruption and return the plant to normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.
Board members asked about timing, likely quantities of material and disposal alternatives; staff said estimates of removed material varied by location inside the basin and that drying could take days to weeks depending on weather.
