Brookings-Harbor School Board unanimously approves statement condemning violent rhetoric, clarifies limits of authority

The Brookings-Harbor School Board unanimously approved a written statement Sept. 15 addressing recent online commentary attributed in the record to Amber Harkins and its disruptive effect on schools and neighborhoods. Katherine Johnson moved to approve the statement; Trish Walker seconded, and the motion passed 5-0.

Board Chair Jay Trost read the board’s prepared statement aloud: "The Brookings-Harbor School Board is aware of recent online commentary circulating in the community originating from Amber Harkins. We recognize this message has created enormous disruption and anxiety within our schools and neighborhoods." The statement further said, "We stand firmly against violence, threats of violence, or the glorification of violent acts. We also unequivocally condemn horrific acts of violence in general, regardless of where or by whom they occur, as they have no place in a safe and caring community."

The statement clarified the board’s legal scope: it may act only on matters involving district operations, employees, and students and does not have authority to sanction or discipline individuals who are not district employees, even when community concern is raised. The board said it will reaffirm its commitment to student and staff safety and to promoting civil discourse and nonviolent problem-solving.

The motion to approve the statement passed with recorded votes: Janece Payne — Aye; Trish Walker — Aye; Alan Nidiffer — Aye; Katherine Johnson — Aye; Jay Trost — Aye. Chair Jay Trost adjourned the meeting at 5:36 p.m.
