22nd District petition for Will Staton invalidated for falling short of signature threshold

At the State Board of Elections meeting on June 5, staff explained the prima facie calculation used to estimate potential signatures for independent nominating petitions and applied it to a People's Party filing for the 22nd Congressional District listing Will Staton.
A presenter said the petition comprised 170 pages with a maximum of 20 possible signatures per page, which "gets them to 3,400 and for congress, they need 3,500." Based on that calculation the petition could not meet the statutory threshold on its face. The board voted to accept staff recommendations and invalidate the petition.
The board treated the page-count method as a preliminary screen and did not count individual signatures in the prima facie review, staff said. The decision came as part of a single motion that invalidated three petitions the staff had placed on the facially invalid calendar.
