The State Board of Elections voted unanimously on Dec. 9 to certify the statewide canvass of the Nov. 5, 2024 general election.
"With that understanding, is there a motion to certify on the state level the canvas that has been circulated to the commissioners?" Co-Chair Henry Burger asked before the motion was made and seconded; commissioners responded with "Aye" and the board proceeded to the signing of the certification documents. Burger reminded the board that presidential certifications must also be signed by the governor and the secretary of state and that the documents must be sent to Washington immediately.
Staff told commissioners they had aggregated county statements of canvass for every contest listed on the certification — presidential electors, U.S. Senate, congressional seats, state senate and assembly contests — and provided documentation showing winners for commissioners’ review. Staff also warned that several county boards were still conducting manual recounts in contests with margins under 0.5%, so amended county certifications could arrive and be handled as needed.
The board moved directly from the vote to finalize signatures; members muted while staff completed the paperwork and indicated they would adjourn the canvass portion before resuming the public meeting.
Next steps: staff will complete the signed certification packets for transmission to the governor’s office, the secretary of state, and the appropriate federal authorities as required by state law.
