State Board of Elections creates Accessibility Services & Training unit, appoints director and deputy

The State Board of Elections on Aug. 6 established an Accessibility Services & Training unit to coordinate accessibility across the electoral process and to oversee the statutorily mandated poll worker training institute. The board unanimously approved a motion to create the unit and to appoint Helen Hellman as director.
"This unit will focus on developing, managing, and overseeing a comprehensive approach to accessibility with the electoral process," the co-executive director said during the staff report. Hellman was described in staff remarks as an experienced senior advocate with DRNY. Jennifer Monell, who has worked at the board since 2021 and previously in higher education, was unanimously appointed deputy director.
Commissioners praised the appointments during the roll call, calling the selections well suited to the new unit's work. The board also noted that Kevin Murphy, who has served as deputy counsel, is slated for appointment as Republican co-counsel and the board voted to approve that promotion in the meeting.
