Seaside SD 10 advisory committee schedules Feb. 10 hearing on challenged Sherman Alexie novel

The Seaside SD 10 Advisory Committee on Feb. 5 set an in-person hearing for Monday, Feb. 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the secondary school library to review a formal challenge to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Administrator Cate Blakesley said. The committee will receive statements from the challengers, the classroom teacher and other invited community members.
Blakesley outlined the review process and timeline under board policy and said the committee will forward its recommendation to the Superintendent, who will pass it to the School Board. She told committee members the book is assigned in English 9B for Grade 9. "she proposed that the next meeting be on Monday, February 10, at 6:00 pm, in-person at the secondary school library," the transcript states.
Committee members asked staff to provide supporting documents at the hearing. Blakesley said staff member Ann Susee prepared a written explanation of how the materials are used and that it will be provided at the Feb. 10 meeting. The committee also agreed that each public speaker at that hearing will have a three-minute time limit.
Next steps: Blakesley will contact the two challengers, the teacher and other suggested witnesses to confirm participation and distribute staff materials before the Feb. 10 hearing.
