Klamath County School Board reviews facilities priorities amid projected housing growth

The Klamath County School District Board of Directors on Oct. 14 reviewed facilities priorities developed by the district's facilities committee and heard presentations about local housing projections that could affect enrollment.
Superintendent Glen Szymoniak told the board the facilities committee met recently to inventory repair, replacement and construction needs and to establish a prioritized list. That prioritized list will be presented during the district's regular board meeting, Szymoniak said in the meeting materials distributed to members.
City of Klamath Falls planning manager Joe Wall and Diana Otero, executive director of the Klamath Housing Authority, provided information to the board about projected housing growth in areas near district schools. Board materials and staff identified Ferguson Elementary and Brixner Jr. High as two buildings located in proximity to the projected growth that could accommodate additional students.
Board Chair Brooke Kliewer voiced concern about the district's ability to pass a bond in the current economic climate, noting that funding constraints could limit the district's options for addressing the priority list. No bond proposal was put before the board at the special meeting; staff said the detailed priorities would be presented at the next regular meeting for further consideration.
