South Umpqua board notified of PowerSchool data breach; district posts guidance

South Umpqua School District staff told the school board that the district was among many affected by a cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool and that the vendor and district have taken notification steps.
“Less exciting news, I let you all know about the cybersecurity breach that we have with PowerSchool,” Staff member (speaker 2) said, and added that the district has posted a link on its website with updated information from PowerSchool. The speaker said PowerSchool is contacting people whose information was not included in the district link and offering identity-protection services to those affected.
Board members pressed for detail about how many people were affected and what technical protections are being added. Staff member (speaker 2) said the exposure depended on whether a person had a record in the system (student or employee), that PowerSchool investigators believe data were destroyed and have not been publicly released, and that PowerSchool has implemented additional access controls for accounts with back-end access. The district will continue to post updates and FAQs on its website and to monitor for evidence of further exposure.
