Trustees deadlock on how to fill Place 6 vacancy; no appointment or special election ordered
Summary
Two competing motions to fill the vacant Place 6 seat each received three supporting votes and neither achieved a majority. The board left the vacancy unfilled pending future action.
Trustees debated two different ways to fill the vacant Place 6 seat during the September 15 meeting but neither motion secured the majority needed to pass.
Trustee Kim Boone moved to appoint someone to fill the vacancy until the next trustee election; that motion (seconded by Trustee Brian Boone) received affirmative votes from Paul Arriaga, Kim Boone and Brian Boone (three votes) but did not pass. Trustee Rick Chapa moved instead to order a special election (seconded by Trustee Leo Gonzalez); that motion received yes votes from Mari Jimenez, Rick Chapa and Leo Gonzalez (three votes) and likewise failed to reach a majority. The minutes state, “Neither motion moved forward.”
As a result, the board took no action to fill Place 6 at the meeting. The item may be revived at a later meeting or the board may pursue a different process per applicable law and district policy.
