EDC urges mapping of sidewalks, bike lanes and pursuit of CSLIP grants to boost safety and local commerce

As part of its economic-development recommendations, the committee endorsed safety and connectivity improvements — including pursuing county and state grants to fund sidewalks, crossings and bike lanes — to make businesses more accessible to residents and visitors. Dave described the Complete Streets Local Initiatives Program (CSLIP) as an example funding source that supports sidewalks and non-car connections.

Committee members discussed practical constraints — limited right-of-way, swales used for stormwater management, and prioritization of stretches that would most benefit pedestrian access to commercial plazas. Dave suggested creating a citywide map that identifies highest-priority links, developed through public workshops, to strengthen grant applications and make improvement projects more fundable.

Members noted the potential trade-offs with stormwater needs and the limited physical space in some corridors, and they recommended the map include objective criteria for prioritization and alignment with the comprehensive plan.
