Pitman fire chief says April rail fires ignited by train sparks; borough coordinating with Conrail

Borough Fire Chief Pierson reported that fires on April 17 along the railway between Wenonah and Glassboro caused significant damage in areas including Pitman. He said the fires were caused when a train engine blew sparks that ignited dry brush and credited Pitman Fire Department crews, mutual-aid departments and residents who helped fight the blazes.
Chief Pierson said the borough is "communication is ongoing with Conrail as the Borough navigates the aftermath of these fires" and provided a public point of contact for inquiries: "Any questions from residents can be directed to publicrelations@conrail.com." Chief Dan McAteer said he is preparing a "Railroad Track Safety" presentation to share with the Pitman School District. Council thanked first responders and noted that cleanup included borough public-works crews removing downed trees and debris.
