The Monroe Public Schools Board of Education voted March 24 to approve an employee severance plan for certified staff, a measure administration says could reduce personnel costs while allowing eligible employees to leave on their own terms.
Superintendent Shaw presented the plan as the administration’s recommendation; Sarah Sweat Zigler of the Monroe City Education Association spoke during the public‑comment period in favor of the measure, saying it would offer a humane alternative to involuntary layoffs. "Please vote yes for the severance package," Zigler told the board.
A board member moved to approve the plan; a roll‑call vote carried. Superintendent Shaw said that, if the plan is implemented, an email will go out at 7:00 p.m. to all certified staff who qualify for the program, per the union’s timeline. The board and administration described the measure as a step to reduce staffing‑related budget pressure without forced layoffs.
