The Village of Stronghurst is coping with an underperforming well that village staff say is not meeting demand and has forced an emergency hauling program.
Water Superintendent Ronnie Gittings told the board June 2 that the well has dropped to about 78 gallons per minute and "is failing to satisfy the tower," leaving the water tower approximately 40,000 gallons below where it needs to be. He said usage rises on weekends and the system can enter a "death spiral," requiring crews to haul "3–4 loads every day." Gittings said conditions are worse than last summer and that crews had also cut and were clearing trees around the village that day.
Mayor Brendan Schaley and staff did not announce a firm timetable for repairs during the meeting. The board later entered executive session to discuss hiring for the water superintendent role; the board returned to open session at 6:42 p.m. and took no action, according to the minutes.
