St. Stephen council approves multiple fire department pay increases, appointments and equipment donations

The council approved firefighter personnel changes and a series of pay adjustments at the Jan. 8 meeting. Applications for Assistant Chief 2 (Jeff Blenkush) and Captain (Joe Gordon) were approved by motion. The minutes record the department had six calls in December and 121 calls in 2024.
Pay changes approved included raising per-call pay from $13.50 to $15.00 (with Gene Skaj and Steve Trobec recorded as abstaining on that vote), increasing captain pay from $300 to $400 annually, increasing the fire secretary from $800 to $900, training officer pay from $550 to $750, assistant chief pay from $500 to $1,000, and increasing Fire Chief pay from $2,000 to $2,500. The per diem remains $60/day for travel and mileage remains at the IRS business rate.
Council also approved donation resolutions: Resolution 01082025 ($1,500 for the Fire Department 75th Anniversary event) and Resolution 01082025-1 ($11,000 for the Fire Department Equipment Fund). A separate packet resolution (RESOLUTION NO. 02052025) accepts a $3,000 donation from 'Community Giving' to the fire equipment fund.
