Council approves variance letting Markgrafs place shed in front yard

The St. Stephen City Council held a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 8 for a variance request from Josh and Cassie Markgraf to locate an accessory building in front of their dwelling at 1206 6th Ave SE because of lot topography. No audience members raised objections after Mayor Lisa Marvin asked three times for input.
Councilmembers asked clarifying questions about the setback and exterior color. The council confirmed the structure must be at least 15 feet from the property line; the Markgrafs said they would attempt to match the house color. Councilmember Tom Vouk moved to approve the variance; Steve Trobec seconded and the motion carried. The Markgrafs were instructed to submit a permit application and fee so staff (Ken Lahr and Heather Imdieke) can issue the permit.
The decision allows the family to address site constraints identified by the applicants, subject to the permit application and standard inspection and permit fees.
