The Palos Heights Zoning Board of Appeals recommended approval April 8 of three setback variances for a home addition at 13048 S. 71st Avenue, the board’s minutes show. Petitioner Matthew Cahill told the board he needs more room due to a growing family and because he works from home.
Cahill explained his reasons for the expansion to the board: "the expansion of his family and working at home in his small ranch has required him to need more space." The petition (DOCKET 2026-SUP-06) sought: (A) a south side yard variance of 9.26 inches (reducing the 10-foot setback to 9.2 feet); (B) a north side yard variance of 5.6 feet (reducing the 10-foot setback to 4.4 feet); and (C) a repeat reference to the south side yard variance as recorded in the docket language.
Commissioner Todd Probasco moved to recommend approval; Commissioner Jack Shanahan seconded. The motion "passed unanimously by roll call vote" according to the minutes. The record shows Commissioners Todd Probasco, Robert Starzyk, John Hanley, Jack Shanahan and Thomas Gregory as voting; Jim Hughes and Declan Binninger were listed as absent in the roll call. There were no public comments on the petition.
The board’s minutes provide the recommendation; the minutes do not state any conditions attached to the recommendation or the next procedural step for municipal approval.
