City updates: splash park cleared to proceed; municipal judge resigns, downtown improvements moving forward

City Administrator Michael Grayum told the council the city has received the final notice to proceed for the splash park from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and is awaiting final approval from the Washington State Health Department and Yakima County; construction is expected to begin next month but will not be completed in time for Community Days. Grayum thanked partner organizations that helped stage the third annual 5K for the Fallen and outlined upcoming events including Zillah's second annual 3-on-3 tournament on July 5–6 and a Chamber-hosted beer garden during fireworks on July 4.
Grayum also said Judge Murphy accepted a new position in Kittitas County and resigned as Zillah's municipal court judge; the city is evaluating options that include contracting with Yakima County District Court or hiring a new municipal judge. He reported the downtown revitalization plan is progressing with improvements planned along 6th and 7th streets on First Avenue; once the council approves final plans the city will post a construction bid and notify the community about timing.
