Zillah council authorizes joint agreement with school district to create Zillah Sports Hub

The Zillah City Council on May 19 authorized Mayor Scott Carmack to sign a Joint Operating/Shared Use Agreement with the local school district to establish the Zillah Sports Hub on district property. Councilmember Brian Williams moved the authorization; Councilmember Janice Gonzales seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Superintendent Doug Burge told council the district originally intended the property for a new intermediate school but said that use is no longer feasible and the parcel could serve both school athletic needs and broader community recreation. City Administrator Michael Grayum said the short-term plan is to clear the site, install onsite electrical and wheel-line irrigation, and seed temporary grass fields so city youth leagues can play there next year while the city and district pursue grants and donations for the full build-out.
Officials described a long-term vision that includes multiple synthetic turf fields with lighting, restrooms, concessions and other amenities targeted for completion by 2030, pending funding. The city said it will seek input from coaches, local businesses, foundations and the Yakama Nation as the project advances. The council vote authorizes the mayor to finalize the operating agreement and to participate in the joint committee the city and district will create to coordinate next steps.
