Committee OKs honorifics bill to standardize statutory address in schools and agencies

Representative Mayberry (Speaker 6) presented HB 1666, an amended measure the sponsor said would standardize statutory honorifics used in schools and state agencies and would not affect honorifics such as doctor, coach or teacher. "This bill adds clear clarification because this consistency within our statutory language related to honorifics...the goal is to bring uniformity," the sponsor said.
The bill responds to constituent concerns about teachers using honorifics that differ from the gender assigned at birth; the amendment clarifies the bill would bar use of certain honorifics (including MX) in the statutory list while preserving academic and professional titles. After objections and a recorded previous-question vote, the committee moved HB 1666 to calendar and rules (12 ayes, 3 nays, 3 present not voting).
