Salt Lake City councilmembers interviewed 20 District 4 applicants in a public process that limited each speaker to five minutes. Following the interview round, the council cast votes and advanced Jennifer Napier Pierce and Scott Little as the top two vote‑getters.
Council members proceeded to a runoff vote that ended in a tie. Under state law, the council resolved the tie by a coin toss administered by the city recorder’s office. The recorder announced the coin result: “It is heads. It’s Jennifer,” and Jennifer Napier Pierce was declared selected. The chair said the council would hold a brief formal meeting to adopt the resolution and administer the oath of office so the new member could take her seat at the 7PM meeting.
Jennifer Napier Pierce, who described her background in journalism and philanthropy and her long engagement in Salt Lake City matters, told the council she would bring collaborative and civic‑minded leadership to the role. The council thanked all applicants for their presentations and encouraged continued civic engagement from the many volunteers and applicants who were not chosen.
