The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education unanimously accepted two resignations for purposes of retirement on March 18: School Nurse Mary Kanarvogel, effective June 30, 2026, and Maintenance Worker Greg Sulahian, effective May 15, 2026.
Board President Kathy Lynch paid tribute to both employees during board reports. Speaking about Nurse Kanarvogel, Lynch said, "in the movie version of this meeting, I would stand up and refuse to accept your resignation and storm out," and added that Nurse Mary is, as the transcript records, the district's "G.O.A.T." and a "second mother" to students. Lynch also praised Greg Sulahian as an "amazing addition to the Buildings and Grounds Staff" and noted the challenge of replacing his talents.
