The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education discussed two options for filling the vacancy left by former board member Tracy McCarthy and decided to leave the seat vacant until the May 2026 annual election so that voters can choose the replacement.
Board members considered advertising and interviewing candidates for an interim appointment but, after an extended discussion, opted to allow the regular electoral process to determine the seat. The discussion noted timing and community preference as reasons for waiting. No formal appointment was made during the Sept. 15 meeting.
