Shelter Island board accepts resignation of member Tracy McCarthy; decision on filling seat deferred

The Shelter Island Union Free School District Board of Education on Aug. 25 accepted the resignation of Board Member Tracy McCarthy, effective Aug. 18, 2025. The acceptance was made under agenda item 7.1 and the motion was recorded as carried unanimously.
President Kathleen Lynch outlined three options for addressing the vacancy: keep the seat open until the May 2026 election; advertise and conduct interviews to appoint an interim member to serve until the election; or reduce the board to five members. Board members said they would discuss the options at the board’s next meeting on Sept. 15, 2025, when Member Karina Montalvo is expected to be present.
Members expressed appreciation for McCarthy’s contributions on the record after the motion passed.
