Residents question plans as Seward seeks up to $1 million to convert Bates Barn into community center

The Town of Seward Board said on July 13 it is pursuing a CDBG application for up to $1,000,000 to convert the Bates Barn into a year‑round community center outfitted with electric, sewer and water connections. Councilwoman Wendy Adams Rosa said the town has not yet developed concrete plans for the project.
During the public hearing, residents asked whether grant money could be applied to municipal office space. Councilwoman Rosa said she would look into eligibility; Councilman William Harlow stated at the meeting that the CDBG grant could not be used for office space. Residents Nancy Kniskern and Maryella Davenport said they were concerned grant funds would be directed to the Bates Barn rather than to office space. The board did not finalize project scope at the meeting and said it will research program rules and bring further information to a future meeting.
