Council unanimously approved the design and phrase for a new mural on the Barnes Park gymnasium, selecting the city motto "Faith in the future" over an alternate national phrase. Artists Darren and Tricia Inouye (GeorgiCo) described their childlike illustrative style and community‑focused concept featuring diverse child figures walking toward a sunrise inspired by the San Gabriel Mountains.
The mural will be approximately 30 by 12 feet and is scheduled to be unveiled at the city’s fireworks celebration on Saturday, June 27. Council members suggested opportunities for community participation in painting portions of the mural—particularly with local students—while artists and staff noted the need for professional rendering work for key elements. Council member Goh moved to adopt 'Faith in the future' as the phrase and Council member Lo seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The city’s community participation commission had previously reviewed and recommended the designs. Staff will coordinate timeline and logistics with the artists to meet the unveiling date.
