Sherrill staff says pool grant will proceed if no permissive referendum is filed by May 13

A city staff member told the Sherrill City Commission that the city has moved forward with bond/grant funding for the planned pool project but is in a permissive-referendum waiting period through May 13. “In the event that it doesn't happen, post May 13, we will execute the grant disbursement agreement with the state and get this project moving,” the staff member said.
The staff member said pool pass prices and structures will remain the same for 2026 and that private fundraising is under active discussion after a community member expressed willingness to make a sizable donation. The city is exploring a path to accept private donations and discussed finding a liaison; staff said Jason Merrill has expressed interest in potentially leading or liaising on fundraising work once available.
Staff also provided a zoning update: the Zoning Board of Appeals denied a variance for a U-Haul operation at Sherrill Plaza and the property owner intends to apply for a new special use permit under zoning changes enacted in 2024. The staff member said the special use-permit process gives the city and planning/zoning bodies options for conditions such as fleet size, hours, and buffering that were not previously available.
