Planning Commission begins review of sign ordinance, flags temporary sign issues

City Manager Jon Schneider told the Planning Commission Sept. 5 that the existing Sign Ordinance requires review and amendment, noting the need to remove content-based regulation and to clarify provisions for temporary signs used for community events.
Commissioners discussed a series of questions for staff: how to define "community events" precisely; rules for temporary signs at Brooks Park and other event locations; how to handle off-premise signs and the complications they create; whether flag-style banners should be treated differently from traditional signs; limits on multiple signs at a single location; and whether reader-board signs could be allowed temporarily under a special events permit.
Schneider said he compiled current definitions and regulations from the sign ordinance to present to the board and sought input on which items to prioritize in drafting amendments. No formal motion was recorded to begin an amendment at this meeting; staff will return with draft language for review.
