Newaygo accepts $689,500 EGLE ARP-SRF grant for Wood Street water-main and service-line work

The Newaygo City Council on Aug. 12 approved an American Rescue Plan-State Revolving Fund (ARP-SRF) grant agreement with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) that provides $689,500 for the Wood Street water main and water service-line projects.
City Manager Schneider told council the project will require an approximate $1.2 million loan alongside the grant but that $588,000 of that loan would be forgiven at closing. Schneider also stated the city does not expect water rates to increase because of the project. The motion to approve the EGLE grant agreement passed unanimously on a roll call vote (Yeas: Black, Burns, DeVries, Engemann, Fedell, Golliver, Walerczyk).
The grant was presented as funding for two discrete efforts—replacing the Wood Street water main and replacing or improving water service lines. The minutes record Schneider emphasizing the loan/forgiveness structure and the council approving the agreement; the council did not adopt a rate increase as part of this action. Staff will proceed with procurement and project implementation under the funding terms.
