The discussion followed more than two hours of public comment from residents, business owners and veterans. John Humere urged the board to "table any vote on this resolution tonight and instead provide full background and an explanation of the impacts of this resolution," saying the public lacked essential information. Several KI Sawyer residents and managers voiced fears about displacement and eminent-domain risk, with Rowena Langan warning that “if they decide they want all the housing … you’re gonna be displacing hundreds of people.”
Supporters argued the site could bring jobs and steady economic activity. Chief Master Sergeant Gregory M. Durand, a 27-year Air Force veteran, said the facility "would be a great asset for our community to support that 100%" and described the area as suitable for training. Labor representatives and local business voices also backed further talks, with Dan Hoklinen, president of Local 4950 Steelworkers, saying reopening could provide jobs and stimulus.
Commissioners amended the resolution during debate to limit it to information-gathering and to specify the possibility of "recommissioning … in part." Commissioner Alholm moved the item to the floor; the board adopted amended language and passed the resolution by roll call. Chair (speaker 3) said the amendment was intended to ensure the county gathers information and engages stakeholders without granting broad implementation authority.
The board signaled it will pursue stakeholder outreach, including potentially holding work sessions and meetings on KI Sawyer and in affected communities before taking any subsequent action. Several public commenters and commissioners emphasized the need for transparency and written protections for residents and housing if negotiations proceed.
The resolution was the meeting’s central item and sets in motion additional staff work and public engagement rather than an immediate commitment to redevelop or transfer property use.
