Water purification plant on schedule; two Trident filters due next week, temporary shutdown Jan. 5 planned

Rick Schafer, a city staff member overseeing the project, told the board that below-grade work at the water purification plant is complete and crews finished the second of three large concrete pours the morning of Dec. 18. He said the contractor remained on schedule and that two Trident filters are due next Monday, with the remaining three arriving in about three weeks.
"We'll have a temporary shutdown on January 5, so that we can cut into that line, put a temporary bypass, and then start working on the rapid mix vault that'll go in that location," Schafer said, adding that staff expects no customer impact during that shutdown. He also noted permitting is ongoing with the TCEQ, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Texas Historical Commission, and that an archaeological survey is being completed. Schafer projected a July construction completion, followed by August and September field demonstration testing and startup procedures.
Board members asked practical questions about the deliveries and security. One member asked, "How big is a Trident filter?" Schafer replied, "You're gonna see a 50,000 pound piece of equipment." When a board member raised security questions about the site, the mayor and staff said details should be discussed in executive session.
Schafer said the project team will advertise phase 3 for construction in Q3 and that the board will see more items during the upcoming five-year impact-fee update process.
