Jody Goodhue presented a middle‑school pathway exploration policy intended to increase student awareness of career and technical education (CTE) options and to harmonize district practice with the state template.
The policy memorializes existing activities — presentations and tours with Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School and Rockport Project Lead The Way courses — and adds required documentation practices, including providing 7th‑ and 8th‑grade student names and addresses to the CTE admissions office so prospective students receive information. Goodhue said the district already allows tours and provides records (attendance, discipline, academic) when students apply to North Shore.
Superintendent Mark Franco and committee members framed the change as part of statewide shifts toward a lottery‑based admission system at regional technical schools and as an equity improvement that reduces gatekeeping barriers. Franco noted Rockport’s three‑year average allotment of seats to North Shore and said transportation and unexcused‑absence policies will accommodate visits.
The committee’s policy subcommittee recommended approval and the full committee approved both policies in a single motion.
