Students tell Rockport School Committee why they chose Rockport

A series of middle- and high-school students addressed the Rockport School Committee to explain why they chose the district and what they value about the school community. Charley Martin and other students described feeling welcomed, noted strong teacher relationships, and highlighted leadership opportunities such as student government and Project 351. One student said, “Rockport has completely changed our lives,” describing family hardship followed by support from the district.

Students who had transferred in from other towns — and an exchange student from Argentina — said the small-school environment helped them build relationships and find extracurricular options, from athletics to orchestra. The principal, Miss Rose, and committee members praised the students for candid remarks and asked follow-up questions about what additional programs students might like to see; students generally reported satisfaction but suggested interest in adding teams or programs if enrollment grew.

Committee members said presentations from students are among the most valuable parts of meetings because they provide direct insight into student experience and school climate. Members thanked the students and asked staff to consider how the student perspectives inform future planning.
