County staff proposed increasing the maximum retiree assistance supplement in the Comal County retiree health insurance policy from $100 to $200 per month for eligible retirees effective Oct. 1, 2026. The benefits presenter, addressed during the retiree policy item, said the change maintains existing proof-of-payment and continuous-coverage requirements and estimated that fewer than 40 retirees currently submit receipts for reimbursement; staff estimated an annual cost impact of about $40,000.
Commissioners asked for an example and staff walked through how the supplement would help pre-65 retirees who must maintain private coverage until Medicare eligibility. The court voted to approve the amendment and authorized necessary policy and administrative revisions to implement the change.
