Veteran tells Comal County court he was injured, humiliated while in sheriff's custody

Jonathan Marquez, who identified himself as a disabled veteran and Schertz safety commissioner, told the Comal County Commissioners Court during public comment that he was injured and humiliated while in custody on July 15. "While under the custody of the Comal Sheriff's Office, I sustained multiple injuries," Marquez said, and described being escorted from New Braunfels police custody, placed face down, having a pillowcase put over his head and officers attempting to remove his pants.

Marquez said his wrist began bleeding and he was taken to an emergency room. He asked the sheriff's office, the county and the New Braunfels police for a full accounting of who was present, when his injuries occurred and whether detention personnel caused or contributed to them. "I deserve a complete accounting of how each injury happened, when it occurred, who was present," he said. The court did not take immediate action on the allegation during the meeting; public-comment speakers do not trigger an automatic investigation on the record. Marquez said he had emailed county and city officials and asked for follow-up from the Comal County Sheriff's Office.
