Trustees discuss livestreaming after public calls for greater access; no action taken

Public commenters pressed the San Isidro ISD Board of Trustees to make meetings more accessible, and trustees responded with questions about cost, staffing and privacy.

At the start of the meeting, Samantha Barber told the Board that “livestreaming board meetings could help increase community involvement.” Renee Flores reiterated the point and added that “childcare challenges make it difficult for some families to attend board meetings in person,” urging the district to consider remote access options that reduce barriers to participation.

Trustee Velinda Reyes asked the superintendent about likely costs and staffing needs for livestreaming. Superintendent Elsa V. Morris said expenses vary by the method selected and that staff would be required to implement a livestreaming option; she noted Zoom or recording-plus-archiving as lower‑cost alternatives. "Costs would vary based on the method selected and staff would be needed for implementation," Morris said.

Trustee Cecilia Garza raised concerns about safety and privacy, warning that livestreaming could create public exposure risks given district resources. Trustees emphasized that small districts are required to record meetings and make them available to the public, but they are not required to livestream. The Board requested cost estimates for multiple options — livestreaming, recording, archiving and limited-access virtual platforms — and took no action during the meeting.

Next steps: the superintendent was asked to return to a future meeting with cost estimates and implementation options so trustees can weigh privacy, resource and community‑access tradeoffs.
