Commission approves expansion of commercial pier at 30 Beach Road

The Tisbury Conservation Commission voted unanimously to approve an expansion of the licensed commercial pier at 30 Beach Road, lengthening the structure from 134 feet to 158 feet and widening it by six feet. The commission’s motion, made by Commissioner John Best and seconded by Commissioner Sarah Toste, included standard conditions and required authorization from the Harbor Master and Shellfish Constable.
Engineer Reid Silva described the project as a 24-foot lengthening and six-foot widening of the existing commercial pier used as a staging area for boat work. Owner Brad Abbott said the expansion “would allow more vessels to be tied along each side, provide more depth at the end of the dock for boats with deeper drafts, and the extra width makes it easier for people to pass each other with gear when working.” Silva said the plan is to pull out the pilings and leave any portions that break off below the ocean bottom to minimize disturbance. The commission discussed recommendations included in a letter from the Division of Marine Fisheries during the hearing.
The approval was conditioned on general conservation conditions and the Harbor Master’s and Shellfish Constable’s authorization before final permitting steps. The commission recorded the vote as unanimous in favor: Thomas Robinson, John Best, Caroline Little, Lilian Robinson, and Sarah Toste.
