Rescue groups press Lake County for volunteer access and website updates

At the Lake County Commissioners workshop, rescue leaders and residents asked officials to create a volunteer program and to publish clear, up-to-date information about animals at the county shelter.
"I've offered in the past to even, like, pay for training for dogs," said Jen Manson, who identified herself as president of 1 at a time canine rescue, describing long-term kennel stays that can damage dogs' behavior. Manson named a dog, Macaroni, and urged volunteer walking, enrichment and clearer posting of transfer or reclaim status so interested residents can follow animals' outcomes.
Resident Unni Heineking asked for intake/outcome and euthanasia procedures to be posted publicly: "So that some so that you at any time, you know, can go on the website and kinda look... where did they go?" Administrators said staff will consider models used by neighboring counties and that some volunteer-related tasks (website updates, administrative help) might be among early opportunities for community involvement.
County staff cautioned that volunteers at a government-run shelter require attention to liability and legal compliance. Administrator Jason Boyd said the county must sequence volunteer integration while it updates policy and stabilizes operations.
