The Southwest Independent School District Board of Trustees voted May 6 to accept the superintendent’s recommendation to propose the nonrenewal of the term contract of employee Elsa Sanchez Quintanilla. Mrs. Sudolcan moved the motion and Mr. Carrillo seconded; all members voted in favor and the motion carried.
Board President Sylvester Vasquez Jr. had earlier announced that "the Board would convene in closed session" under the Texas Open Meetings provisions before returning to open session and taking action. The board also voted to authorize Walsh Gallegos attorneys to advise and assist the Board in connection with any nonrenewal hearing and to authorize an attorney from that firm to present the administration's case; Mrs. Sudolcan made that motion and Mr. Sullivan seconded, with the motion passing unanimously.
The minutes record the board's procedural direction that the Superintendent issue written notice to Elsa Sanchez Quintanilla as required by law and authorized the Board President to impose procedural rules for any nonrenewal hearing. The record does not include statements from Ms. Quintanilla or details about the grounds for the proposed nonrenewal; the motion and authorization are the formal actions reflected in the minutes.
