DMVA: Crawford County classified as priority group 2 for veterans cemetery funding; purchase agreement expected soon

Deputy Director Todd Butler of the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), appearing by Zoom, updated the Crawford County Board of Commissioners on the county's status for a veterans cemetery grant.
Butler said the DMVA processes cemetery requests by priority groups, with established veteran cemeteries as priority one and counties like Crawford classified in priority group two. He told the board a grant submitted in 2023 placed Crawford County first within priority-group two and that a purchase agreement for a parcel is expected to be signed in the next few weeks. "A mandatory environmental study will be completed" after the agreement, Butler said, and the county has an initial engineering contract in place. He said notifications about awards are expected between October and January of 2025/2026 and that he will report back to the board quarterly.
Commissioner Goscicki said he was "impressed with the grant received by the library staff" earlier in the meeting and commented on the cemetery update at the time Butler presented. The update did not include a final funding award or timetable beyond the DMVA's stated notification window; costs, parcel details and construction timelines remain subject to the environmental review and engineer findings. The matter will return to the board as the DMVA provides further notices and quarterly reports.
