Elementary leaders outline reading interventions to boost 3rd-grade ELA proficiency

A lead at Coquille Valley Elementary described the districts approach to improving third-grade ELA outcomes, emphasizing a mix of curriculum fidelity, data monitoring, and targeted interventions.
The presenter outlined interventions including a phonics/science-of-reading program for struggling readers, "walk to read" groupings, progress monitoring (oral reading fluency targets rising from about 73 words per minute at the start of year toward a target of roughly 114 WPM), and a 90-minute ELA block that combines whole-group instruction, small-group differentiation and writing practice. "We really wanna focus on the 6 writing traits as part of that work," the CVE presenter said, and described internal monitoring and tiered supports to ensure students in the red zone receive tier 2 or tier 3 interventions.
Staff noted they will move from DIBELS to a new screener next year and will continue to use targeted instructional tools (IXL and other interventions) aligned to the core curriculum. The presentation underscored professional development and scheduled progress monitoring as critical to hitting SB 141 reading targets.
