Chemung Township reviews move to post assessment notices online; mailing cost options examined

Chemung Township trustees were told April 14 that McHenry County will post assessment notices online in 2026 for properties that change only because of the equalization factor, while mailed notices will continue for revaluations, farmland and new properties. The sample postcard notes that "ASSESSMENT NOTICES WILL BE POSTED ONLINE IN 2026" and that the county estimates saving more than $65,000 in postage costs.
Deputy Clerk Margie Schuld presented the assessor's materials on behalf of Township Assessor John Killeen and the board reviewed competitive printing-and-mailing quotes to reach about 4,000 owners. Quotes in the record included totals of $2,318.00 (Copy Express), $2,005.00 (Meridian/Scott Company) and $2,541.85 (Uprinting). An emailed update from Alejandro Benitez noted that Devnet had been updated to include prior notices and that the county plans soft-launch notification tools: "Devnet updated the website to Include the 2025 Assessment Notices."
Trustee Anne moved and Trustee Bill seconded a motion to table a formal township vote on whether to publish and mail postcards at the township's expense; the board approved tabling the matter and will revisit it at the May meeting.
